A town hall meeting is held in one Floyd County community after a landslide forced several families out of their homes.

Since then, office of surface mining officials declared an emergency to help get funds to fix the problem.

But families affected by the landslide say they want help too.

More than 30 people attended the town meeting in Wheelwright to discuss the landslide problem.

“We’re just trying to get as many people involved as they can make something happen and get things done,” William Goodman says.

Families want mining officials to help fix the damage to their homes.

“Nobody’s wanting to take responsibility for the damages done to the houses,” Goodman says.

Mayor David Sammons says inspectors were at the site of the landslide Wednesday afternoon.

“They plan this week to come back and bring a small drill and drill some holes to see what kind of steel they'll have to drive so they can secure part of it,” Sammons says.

They are concerned about the water that is in the mountain that they fear could cause catastrophic damage.

“I’m worried about losing my home,” Misty Tackett says. “I've got four kids but I’m worried about the rest of the town too.”

“They caused the damages to the house,” Goodman says. “So in my opinion, they should be responsible for the damages done to the houses.”

Mayor Sammons hopes to get help soon.

“It's been tiresome,” Sammons says. “We've been up late night and long days trying to figure out what's going to happen. How are the families getting taken care of or if they are going to have a place to stay at.”

And everyone at the meeting hopes this sends a message to anyone who can help.

Around a dozen families were forced out of their homes because of the slide. They say they just want to go home.
