It started as a house fire, but it turned into a confrontation with two state police troopers that left one man dead.
If you drive up Line Stone Branch Road, you'll find a house that has burned, but the question is how that led to a police shooting. It's a question state police say they don't have a good answer for.
"There was something going on with him last night and that is all under investigation to determine exactly what did transpire last night," said Kentucky State Police Trooper Don Trosper.
What state police can say is that 29 year old John Partin is dead shot several times in the chest after a confrontation with two officers Saturday night. They say that confrontation happened at this house after police say Partin burned another house down the road.
Police say it looks like those troopers, 24 year veteran Gary Martin and 9 year veteran Scott Bunch, did follow the correct procedure and that's why more people weren't hurt.
"They followed exact procedure as they are trained and luckily, this time, officers didn't get hurt," Trosper said.
State police say the investigation is ongoing and the two officers involved will be on administrative leave until it's done.
Police tell us this is the first trooper involved shooting in that area in several years.
