Pikeville Medical Center is expanding and the project is expected to create more than one thousand new jobs!

The hospital received 44 and a half million dollar loan from the USDA to build a medical office complex and a parking garage at the hospital.

Officials say this is good news.

It is expected to improve both the local economy and healthcare in the region.

“11,000 square feet, still gives you the 11 stories,” Jerry Johnson, PMC Chief Operating Officer.

Pikeville Medical Center officials are planning to build an 11 story medical complex and research center in front of the hospital.

“You'll be able to do a more "one-stop" kind of approach to healthcare. You can come in and see your physician. You walk across the hall and get whatever testing may need to occur,” Johnson said.

A parking garage with one thousand spots is also part of the plan.

The hospital received 44 and a half million dollars in a low interest loan from the USDA's stimulus funds for the entire project.

The project will also the local economy. The construction is expected to create more than one thousand new jobs! Good news when Pike County's unemployment rate is above the state average.

“Make a difference certainly. A thousand jobs as it goes on and the income and what it will generate in the community, in our grocery stories and restaurants,” Pike County Judge Executive Wayne T. Rutherford said.

Once construction is finished, around 100 new permanent jobs will be added to staff the medical office.

‘Be able to kill two birds with one stone, provide that additional health care that is needed, that high quality care, and also be able to help improve the overall economy of the area,” Johnson said.

Officials plan to break ground in the spring.

They hope to finish construction and open the new office and parking garage in two years.
