WISE, Va. (AP) - Democratic Presidential candidate John Edwards
is campaigning in Wise, Virginia today and will make stops in
Edwards held an outdoor round-table in Wise to hear about
indigent health care from Appalachian doctors, community leaders
and the working poor.
He heard about thousands of patients who rely on an annual
mobile heath fair in southwest Virginia as their sole source of
health care.
Doctors told Edwards the impoverished Appalachian region is a
hotbed of heart disease, lung cancer and black lung, but they
didn't want Edwards' poverty tour to reinforce negative stereotypes
of the region.
Edwards said the challenges don't define the people of the area.
He added (in these words) "Their strength and defiance and courage
define them. We're here to help."
Edwards said lack of access to health care isn't limited to the
Appalachian region - it's a national problem.
