Police continue to investigate an alleged attempted jail drug smuggling scheme.
A captain at the Pike County Jail today told us that the only items that can be left with inmates by outsiders is cash, so we're still not sure just how inmates were planning on smuggling in the marijuana and pain medications that were intercepted by police.
As we reported on Friday, seven people, both inmates *and* non-inmates were charged for what police are calling a "criminal syndicate."
State Police say most of these individuals are being charged with conspiracy to promote contraband...which can carry up to five additional years in jail.
"That is the charge that's used anytime anything is carried into the jail or prison type facility that is not supposed to be there," says Trooper Scott Hopkins.
State Police reported last week that more arrests are possible... and the investigation continues.
Angel Shanowat, David Thacker, William Hitchcock, Larry Heath Phillips, Dorothy Williams, Christian Phillips, and Jason Wesley Williams were arrested and charged with engaging in organized crime and conspiracy to promote contraband.
