Jury Deliberating Sentence For Fort Campbell Soldier

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) - A military jury at Fort Campbell has been deliberating today on a sentence for a soldier convicted of rape and murder in the death of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and her family.

Jurors have been deliberating for several hours at the post in the case of Private First Class Jesse Spielman. They spent about three and a half hours before deciding to convict Spielman last night.

The jury can choose between sentences of life, or life without parole for the 22-year-old soldier.

The attack took place last year in Mahmoudiya, a village about 20 miles south of Baghdad.

Military prosecutors did not say Spielman took part in the rape or murders but alleged he went to the house and served as a lookout.

Three of Spielman's comrades have pleaded guilty for their roles in the slayings. A fourth, former soldier Steven Green, is facing a civilian murder trial.
