FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A former eastern Kentucky judge and seven
others are set to be sentenced on convictions that they schemed to
buy votes for several local offices in three elections.
U.S. District Judge Danny Reeves is scheduled to hand down a
sentence for R. Cletus Maricle, a one-time judge in Clay County, on
Thursday in federal court in Frankfort. The others are scheduled to
appear before Reeves throughout the week, starting Tuesday.
A jury in 2010 convicted Maricle and the others on charges
including mail fraud, extortion and the laundering of money used to
buy votes. Prosecutors argued that the defendants participated in a
plot to buy votes in Clay County in 2002, 2004 and 2006.
Defense attorneys argued that no votes were bought during the
times laid out in the indictments.
