Rural areas could experience shortage of doctors

Updated: Mon 7:09 PM, Apr 19, 2010

Some say rural areas in Kentucky may experience a shortage of doctors due to the new health care legislation.

With more Kentuckians eligible for health insurance doctors will likely be trying to fit in more patients.

“With the new health care plan, what that does is provide more access for patients, but it may provide a benefit that we cannot accommodate. Because we may not have the physicians or other health care practitioners to care for those patients,” Emery Wilson said.

Rural hospitals already have programs in place to encourage middle and high school students to pursue careers in medicine.
