Governor, Transportation Cabinet Officials Award $1.9 Million Highway Rehabilitation Contract in Perry County

JACKSON, Ky. - (Aug. 22, 2007) - The awarding of a nearly $1.9 million highway asphalt rehabilitation contract in Perry County is yet another example of the commitment of Governor Ernie Fletcher and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to provide a safe and reliable transportation system in the Bluegrass State.

"Our administration is committed to providing the best possible transportation network for Perry County residents as well as everyone in this state," said Governor Fletcher.

The contract is for asphalt rehabilitation and resurfacing of 6.14 miles of the Hal Rogers Parkway, from the Leslie County line extending east to the bridge crossing the North Fork of the Kentucky River.

"The Hal Rogers Parkway is one of the most important highways serving southeastern Kentucky," Governor Fletcher said. "This road is a major access route to the region, and is vital to the area's economic well-being as well as providing access to educational, recreational and health care opportunities. We must keep it in good repair to provide the maximum benefit to residents of the region as well as visitors."

Mountain Enterprises, Inc., was awarded the low-bid contract for $1,866,970.20. The project is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 15.

"Governor Fletcher has instructed us to make sure our highways are safe and in good repair, and conducive to promoting economic activity," Transportation Cabinet Secretary Bill Nighbert said. "These are our primary concerns as we maintain and improve our highway system. Good roads and bridges are an important part of our infrastructure and are a vital component in the quality of life we hope to provide to all Kentuckians. Our state is fortunate to have a governor who is committed to highway safety and making improvements that have many benefits."

Construction activities are scheduled on a tentative basis and are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists are asked to "Drive Smart" in work zones and be aware of workers, traffic control devices and construction equipment when traveling in areas where projects are ongoing.
