Governor Fletcher, Transportation Cabinet Officials Award $1.3 Million Bridge Replacement Contract in Powell County

JACKSON, Ky. - (Aug. 22, 2007) - The awarding of a $1.3 million bridge replacement contract in Powell County is yet another example of the commitment of Governor Ernie Fletcher and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to provide a safe and reliable transportation system in the Bluegrass State.

"Keeping our state's bridges safe is a top priority," Governor Fletcher said. "Our administration has made a significant effort to replace substandard bridges in an effort to keep Kentucky's transportation infrastructure functional and in good repair."

The contract is for replacement of the bridge carrying KY 11 and KY 15 (Stanton-Beattyville Road) over the Middle Fork of the Red River between Bowen and Nada, 0.3 miles east of the KY 1639 intersection. A new bridge and approaches will be constructed to replace the old bridge at this location.

"This route is a key gateway to the popular tourist areas of the Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge State Resort Park," Governor Fletcher said. "It is also heavily used by local traffic. Replacement of this bridge will mean a safer route for residents of Powell County as well as visitors to the region."

Judy Construction Co. was awarded the low-bid contract for $1,354,467.40. The project is scheduled to be completed within 100 working days of its beginning.

"Governor Fletcher has instructed us to make sure our highways are safe and in good repair, and conducive to promoting economic activity," Transportation Cabinet Secretary Bill Nighbert said. "These are our primary concerns as we maintain and improve our highway system. Good roads and bridges are an important part of our infrastructure and are a vital component in the quality of life we hope to provide to all Kentuckians. Our state is fortunate to have a governor who is committed to highway safety and making improvements that have many benefits."

Construction activities are scheduled on a tentative basis and are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists are asked to "Drive Smart" in work zones and be aware of workers, traffic control devices and construction equipment when traveling in areas where projects are ongoing.
