WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican activists say Idaho Senator Larry
Craig is considering resigning.
This, after days of public and private pressure to give up his
seat -- following the news of his arrest in connection with a
police sting at an airport men's room. Craig pleaded guilty to
He has denied any wrongdoing in the incident, but the episode
has roiled the Republican party and produced numerous calls for him
to step down.
Party officials say a statement was even drafted at GOP
headquarters, calling for Craig to resign. They say it wasn't
issued, because of concerns that it would complicate the quiet
efforts under way to get him to give up his seat.
Any resignation would clear the way for Idaho's Republican
governor to name a replacement who would serve until the end of
Craig's current term in 2009.
