A shootout involving police leaves one person in the hospital.

It happened in Mash Fork, just outside of downtown Salyersville.

Police say they were responding to a complaint about a man who was under the influence of alcohol when the shots started flying.

Police say the suspect, Stuart Grant Linz, was the only one shot.

He was airlifted to the UK Medical Center.

Two Salyersville police officers and one state police trooper fired the shots.

Police haven't released a lot of details, but neighbors are surprised Linz was involved.

Investigators say two Salyersville police officers responded to the Mash Fork Trailer Park after someone reported a drunken man inside one of the homes.

A trooper later came to help.

“I heard something that sounded like gunshots. I heard two, then a pause, and then I hear four or five more,” Madge Patrick said.

The three officers were not injured, but State Police say the suspect, Stuart Grant Linz, was shot and taken to the hospital.

The shooting happened right outside Linz's home.

Neighbors say he's lived there for five years and never caused any problems.

Linz's family didn't want to go on camera, but they also say they're shocked he was involved in a police shootout and don't know why it happened.

State Police say the investigation is still in the preliminary stages.

“The scene was secure immediately following the shooting situation. We are investigating, to determine what exactly did happen Tuesday night,” Trooper Scott Hopkins said.

Kentucky State Trooper Brad Austin is on administrative leave during the investigation.

Police say Salyersville officer Matthew Watson also fired his weapon and the other Salyersville officer at the scene didn't shoot at all.
