Flooding is a major concern today across Eastern Kentucky as rivers continue to rise after the heavy rain and snow melt of the last few days. Now as the rain has transitioned to sleet and snow roads will become treacherous and ice covered. Flood Warnings and Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect for most of the day. A family on the way to the hospital hits the Martin County jailer's car, sending five people to the hospital including a prisoner.
Police say Jailer Larry Jude was turning off U.S. 23 to the Big Sandy Jail when the SUV hit him. Investigators say the SUV had emergency flashers on and the family inside was going to Cabell-Huntington Hospital after another relative was just in a wreck in Floyd County and air lifted out.
Sheriff's deputies are still investigating who's at fault.
"Preliminary reports indicate, like I said, according to witness statements, the Martin County jailer's vehicle turned left hand into the path of the vehicle driven by Mr. Howell," said Sgt. Tom Wyatt with the Johnson County Sheriff's Department.
The prisoner, Robert Collins, and Betty Howell, Chris Stephens, and Wendy Johnson were all air lifted to Cabell-Huntington Hospital. Jailer Larry Jude is at Paul B. Hall in Paintsville.
