Kentucky Congressman Doesn't See Troops Returning Before Year's End

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. Representative Ed Whitfield says he's
more optimistic than ever that progress is being made to stabilize
Iraq and end violence after listening to General David Petraeus'
report.

Whitfield says he doubts that troops from Fort Campbell will be
home before the end of the year because they were just redeployed.
Whitfield added (in these words) "But the general indicated that
some withdrawals can continue through the summer of 2008, and that
he'll give another assessment in March."

Petraeus formerly commanded Fort Campbell's 101st Airborne and
led its troops in their first deployment four years ago in northern
Iraq.

Whitfield said he got to know Petraeus while the general
commanded the 101st and talked with him briefly after his
congressional testimony yesterday.
