A Perry County miner is laid to rest days after an accident in the mines killed him.

29 year-old Bobby Smith died from injuries suffered in the Leeco 68 mine in Jeff, Perry County on Thursday.

Steve Sebastian worked with Bobby Smith in the mine for the last three years. He is at Lotts Creek United Baptist Church to remember his friend's life.

"I'm here to pay respects to him and his family," Sebastian said.

He says the accident has shaken the mining team.

"We all know it's a possibility, but it's tough to lose somebody. That had never happened to me before. I ain't been around nothing like that," Sebastian said.

Sebastian says Smith was a leader down in the mines and was well-liked by his co-workers.

"Just a good boy, you'd cut up and joke with him," Sebastian said.

Smith's relatives say he was a devoted husband and father to his three children. They say Smith was a dedicated miner, but he also loved riding, which was a passion he shared with Sebastian.

"We rode bikes a lot. We rode all the way to Prestonsburg last time," Sebastian said.

Sebastian has not worked in the mine since the accident, and says that first time will be tough.

"Scares me really, but just keep him in your heart and move on," Sebastian said.

But he says that is easier said than done.

State officials are still investigating the incident at the mine.
