Rescue Squads training in Floyd County

Squads across the state are training for swift water rescues.

The only place in kentucky to obtain official certification for these rescues is at facilities in Floyd County.

Squads from Johnson, Wolfe, Floyd and even Warren county trained on Saturday in the Big Sandy River in Prestonsburg.

They practiced drills that will prepare them for flash flooding rescues, which one trainee says will greatly benefit his squad.

"In back waters in the county, there were some incidents earlier this year where we actually had some swift water rescues. It was then we realized we didn't have the gear to do that safely, which inspired us to take this class," John May, from Wolfe County Rescue Squad, said.
