Starting Monday, Pikeville College students will be notified immediately if there's danger on campus.
A new alert system will send cell phone text messages and emails to all students telling them about the emergency and letting them know what to do and where to go. Campus security officers wanted the program after seeing the Virginia Tech shooting earlier this year and wanted to prevent a similar situation.
"The problems they were having at Virginia Tech was the communication problem and this solves that," says Campus Safety and Security Director Allen Abshire. "If we can get the information to the people as quick as possible, then it will help."
More than 600 students are already signed up for the alerts.
