The floods in Pike County displaced numerous people from their homes, leaving them with nothing.

There are five shelters available in the area, but most people gathered at Pike County Central High School. About 40 displaced people are at the high school.

Most say they left their homes quickly after seeing the flood waters last night.

"Immediately. When the water came, it came. It came rushing through there," James Hayden said.

Hayden says the damage to his house was severe, but it wasn't as bad as some of his neighbors.

"I think we were kind of one of the lucky ones really because it didn't get washed away. But we got a lot of damage. Everything is gone. Everything is soaked," Hayden said.

Volunteers are working around the clock at the shelter to help to people staying there in any way possible.

"We've had people come in that have lost everything they've had to the flood. They have nothing. So we've been able to provide them with food, shelter, and a shower and just try to be there for them until they can get home. Right now they can't even get to their house," Amanda Presley said.

The people at the shelter are grateful that they have a place to stay for the time being, But they are most worried about what's going to happen to their homes and all of their belongings.

"When we walked in, the mud was way over the top of our shoes. Everything in it is destroyed. All the baby's clothes are ruined. Everything is gone," Danny Casey said.

Most people at they shelter say they plan on staying until it is safe to go home and see what they can salvage, if anything at all.

Volunteers are greatly needed at the shelters. If you are interested, contact the Division of Emergency Management.
