A fire that started in one man's garage destroyed his entire home late Wednesday afternoon.

It happened just off Highway 15 in Isom. Fire officials say their resources were no match for the extremely dry conditions.

It all started in what was once a garage, now unrecognizable in the charred remains of one man's home.

"When we got to pumping the water, we got the garage part put out between the garage and the house, and then all the trucks ran out of water," said Gary Rogers with the Letcher County Fire and Rescue.

By the time they came back with more, it was too late.

"Due to the severity of the fire and the heat, we couldn't get back in to get it out," Rogers said.

One person was home when it started, but he escaped unharmed. Two firefighters suffered minor burns.

"Then we ended up with the woods on fire and we've now got the forest department up in the woods trying to get it out," Rogers said.

The man who lived here did not want to go on camera, but a neighbor says their memories here are irreplaceable.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Crews finished putting out the forest fire around 7:30 Wednesday night.
