Report Says Public Defenders Carrying Too Many Cases

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A new report says the heavy caseloads of
public defenders in Kentucky may jeopardize their clients access to
justice.
The report by the Department of Public Advocacy says public
defenders are juggling about 436 cases per year.
Department of Public Advocacy head Ernie Lewis says that's "no
where close to achieving the goal of reducing caseloads to 400
cases per year" for public defenders.
Although it's a slight decrease in caseloads from last year,
Lewis says the department's caseload has reached an all-time high
of more than 148,000 cases.
