ATV death raises safety concerns

PINEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - An ATV death that took place over weekend is raising safety concerns for some folks in eastern Kentucky.

Steven Payne died from a head-on collision while at the wilderness trail off-road park during the park's annual Halloween event.

It is considered a "ride-at-your-own risk" park meaning that it is up to the drivers to abide by the park's rules and regulations.

The event hosted thousands of drivers and campers in the park's nine thousand acres.

Some believe the size of the crowds became too much for officials at the park to control.

“There couldn't have been a hundred police officers that would have patrolled all the people that were there. This is a large area,” said Bell County Sheriff Bruce Bennett.

Bell county EMS were on sight when the crash happened and report a response time of almost 8 minutes.

Two other ATV accidents occurred during the weekend but neither involved life threatening injuries.
