It was a day of thanks at the WestCare homeless shelter in Pikeville. Students from the human services program at the Big Sandy Community and Technical College organized a Thanksgiving dinner; cooking and serving everything themselves. They did it with help from Hope in the Mountains, a drug treatment facility for woman.

Thanksgiving came early for a group of people at the WestCare homeless shelter. There was quite the spread with all of the Thanksgiving essentials from turkey and ham to green beans and mashed potatoes along with a huge selection of desserts.

"We really believe in the therapy of warm food in your belly and what better time of year to do that than right now," said Tammy Ball, the Human Services Program Coordinator.

BSCTC students cooked, set up and served the entire meal.

"So many of us take things for granted; the family, the home cooked meals, just having all of that in one home. I think we take that for granted and it's important to have that," said Thelma Goforth, a student at BSCTC.

The students also ate dinner and mingled with people at the shelter.

"I got more out of seeing those people smile and get together and talk like a family rather than just the fact I was bringing food in," Latasha Hutchinson said, another student at the college.

The students say it was a rewarding experience

"There's so much need out there and this is just a drop in the bucket of what we need to be doing. There's so much more than we can do and get more people involved," Goforth explained.

They are hoping to make the dinner even bigger next year. This is the 8th year students from the college served dinner at the WestCare homeless shelter.
