Accident shuts down U.S. 23

A man was hit by a vehicle on U.S. 23 near the state police post just outside of Pikeville.

The accident shut down the busy roadway.

Officials say the man was crossing the street in front of Wendy's when he was hit by a red Mustang.

He was taken to Pikeville Medical Center with critical injuries, then flown to another hospital.

The driver of the Mustang was also taken to Pikeville Medical with non life threatening injuries.

Police have not released any names.

At last check, U.S. 23 was still shut down in that area.

Police are filtering vehicles through but are asking drivers to take an alternate route if possible.
