Adkins: Bipartisanship a must in upcoming session

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - House Floor Leader Rocky Adkins is calling for bipartisan cooperation in the upcoming legislative session to deal with the complexities of reforming the state's pension system and tax code.

The state Legislature is scheduled to convene on Jan. 8.

Adkins, a Democrat from Sandy Hook in northeastern Kentucky, said Friday he expects lawmakers to tackle legislation to whittle down a $33 billion unfunded liability in the pension plan for government retirees and to take a close look at proposed tax reforms. He said passing legislation "is going to take a tremendous amount of bipartisan support."

The Legislature is scheduled to meet only 30 days this year. Gov. Steve Beshear has said he may call lawmakers back into special session if they can't get work completed on pensions and tax reform.
