INEZ, Ky. (WYMT) - One Martin County school is getting a little safer.

Administrators say they will add a few different things to step up security at Sheldon Clark High School, including a buzzer system at the front entrance.

Right now almost anyone can come and go as they please through the front entrance, but Martin County school officials say soon that will change.

"The events that happened and are on the news are always unsettling for parents and teachers and students, so we feel as though we need to be proactive in addressing those issues," said Superintendent Mark Blackburn.

Sheldon Clark Principal Robbie Fletcher says the school board recently agreed to add a buzzer system on the entrance. People will have to buzz the front office to be let in.

"Anything that you can add to add time to any type of issues that are going on that's great," he said.

Blackburn says a buzzer system is imperative.

"It's just the first line of security. It allows us to control who gets in the building, who gets out of the building," said Blackburn.

Administrators say they are very excited to see security upgrades at Sheldon Clark, and they say other schools in the area have also received similar upgrades.

"Our latest security upgrade has been the buzzer systems. we've installed those at warfield middle school, the technical center, and also inez middle school," said Blackburn.

They will also be upgrading the existing security camera system at Sheldon Clark to keep a closer eye on what is going on inside and outside the school.

"Thirty-two cameras not only recording here, but they'll also record at a remote location," said Fletcher.

Officials say they will be glad to have the upgrades, but hope they never have to be used in an emergency.

They hope to have the upgrades installed by next week.
