'Adopt-a-Dog' month underway

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - October is 'Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month' and several groups are working diligently to help animals in our region find homes.

Both the Appalachian SPCA and the Pike County Animal Shelter hosted adoption fairs in Pikeville this weekend.

Volunteers with Appalachian SPCA are encouraging folks to adopt their next pet. Appalachian SPCA President Cindy Johnson says, "We've found that shelter animals make the best pets for families. They are so loving and appreciative, it is like they know they've been rescued and there are so many of them out there...that there is no need for anyone to ever buy a pet from a backyard breeder or a pet store when you can rescue an animal."

Many shelters and groups in our area currently offer discounted adoption rates for 'Adopt-a-Dog Month.'
