LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Candidates for state agriculture
commissioner traded barbs Monday at a forum in front of the
Kentucky Farm Bureau's board of directors.
Much of the campaign has been focused on the qualifications of
Democrat Bob Farmer, a businessman from Louisville who has never
run for office. Republican James Comer, a state representative and
cattle farmer from south-central Kentucky, told board members that
Farmer is unfit for the job.
Comer said the state needs a "serious ag commissioner" to keep
the office's budget from shrinking during economic uncertainty.
Farmer says Comer is a longtime politician with his eye on a
higher office beyond the ag job. Farmer said the state's ag
department is "a mess" and he pledged to "clean house" if
elected.
The Farm Bureau does not endorse political candidates.
