Alleged weapon used in attempted murder case has been recovered

HARLAN COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - A Harlan County man charged with attempted murder gives police the alleged gun used in the shooting.

Boss Saylor, 75, is accused of shooting Clifford Napier, 59, outside the Pine Flat Baptist Church in Tremont.

Tuesday, Saylor's attorney took police and the media to a gun in the woods so it could be turned in as evidence.

The gun was on the ground under leaves next to a tree in the woods behind Saylor's house.

Defense Attorney Douglas Asher II says Saylor told him this is the gun he used to allegedly shoot Clifford Napier.

"Mr. Saylor voluntarily produced this item of evidence without any request from police because he doesn't have anything to hide," said Asher.

State police say on September 19th, Saylor shot Clifford Napier several times behind the Pine Flat Baptist Church. Napier lives next door to the church. Saylor lives on the other side.

"We're claiming self-defense," said Asher.

Saylor bonded out of jail Tuesday. The defense attorney says Saylor then took him to the woods behind his house and showed him the gun. Asher called Kentucky State Police and turned it over to the detective who recovered it from the scene.

State police said no one on scene could do an interview. State police say they are still gathering information and will release more on Wednesday.

Asher did not say how the gun ended up in the woods but says Saylor wanted police to have it.

"We're not hiding anything. It's totally voluntary. My client has nothing to hide, not then, not now," said Asher.

The defense attorney says he took WYMT to the scene and showed us the gun because he wanted the media to see him give it to police.

Saylor was not home. His attorney says he is staying somewhere else while out on bond.

There is no word on Napier's condition, but officials say he will survive.
