Alpha partnering on section of Coalfields highway

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Department of Transportation has reached an agreement with Alpha Natural Resources for engineering work on a section of the Coalfields Expressway in southwest Virginia.

VDOT says preliminary work will be conducted on the nearly 7-mile Pound Connector and 5-mile Doe Branch sections of the highway.

When completed, the four-lane highway would stretch 49 miles from Pound in Wise County through Dickinson and Buchanan counties to the West Virginia state line and continue 60 miles to Beckley, W.Va.

In July, VDOT completed the first section of unpaved road bed for the highway's Hawks Nest segment in Buchanan County.
