PAINTSVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - One of the biggest Eastern Kentucky festivals celebrated a major milestone Friday, October 5th.

Since 1962 apples have been famous in Johnson County, and this year marks 50 years of the Apple Festival in Paintsville.

“A lot of people thought there wouldn't be one but there is and we're just happy that we've made it this far,” said Apple Festival Chairman, Ray Tosti.

One of the non-profit organizations was also celebrating.

“It's also oil springs fire department 50th anniversary. We've been in business 50 years,” said Oil Springs Fire Chief, Wade Cantrell.

Officials with the department said their famous funnel cakes are still a hit after so many years.

“People come across that ramp and say we've come from Lexington to get these funnel cakes and we wait from year to year to get these funnel cakes,” said Cantrell.

“We haven't been selling down here since the festival started but it's been close to it. I'd say at least 30 years,” said Deputy Fire Chief, Aaron Cantrell.

They said that the cakes are a festival favorite that provide money to pay their many bills.

“That’s what it's all about, to help your neighbors out, and help people that just pass through the community,” said Aaron.

They’re a group that have tried to sever their community for nearly a century one cake at a time.
