GEORGETOWN, KY -- Police are investigating a Georgetown fifth-grader's report of a strange man attempting to abduct her at a bus stop this morning.

The 10-year-old said that a man in a four-door maroon car tried to coerce her into the vehicle around 7:15, at a bus stop on Degaris Mill Road. She ran from the man and hid on a neighbor's porch, then reported the incident to her grandmother.

The police were called and searched the area, but said they had little information other than the color of the car. They reported they were unable to find either the subject or the vehicle.

Captain Robert Swanigan of the Georgetown Police Department says there are "significant inconsistencies" in the girl's story. He says officers will, however, step up patrols in the area.

"We will contiune to saturate the bus stops, check school zones," he said.

Administrators at Ann Mason Elementary, which the child attends, e-mailed an alert of the incident to parents. Patricia Putty, the district superintendent of Scott County, told parents and the community that the Georgetown police will step up supervision in the area.

She also asked parents to be vigilant of their children's safety. "We encourage parents to accompany children to the bus stop or have students use the buddy system at all times," she wrote in the e-mail. "It is important to become aware of the adults in your neighborhood ... and report any activities that are out of the norm."

Noting that the fifth-grader had used what she had learned at school about "stranger danger" in order to get away, she encouraged parents to discuss safety-strategies and stranger awareness with their children.
