BETSY LAYNE, Ky. (WYMT) - A Floyd County robber backed down, but the scare put one school on lockdown.

Police say the man walked into the Betsy Layne Family Dollar and demanded cash, but they say he left without a penny.

It happened about 9:00 Thursday morning.

"It is a little bit out of the norm for what we see here at the Pikeville post but people need to be alert. These businesses, employees at these businesses, need to be aware that it can happen at any time," said Kentucky State Police Trooper Shaun Little.

A man went into the store demanding money from the cashier, but they say he got spooked and ran before he got anything.

Store employees could not speak on camera, but Mountain News did talk to the cashier who was there when it all happened and she said at first she thought it was all a joke.

When she realized what was happening she called police.

Then police told Betsy Layne Elementary School, which sits right behind the store, what was happening.

"We immediately went into lockdown and followed the school procedures to make sure all doors were locked, exterior doors were locked and all classrooms were locked," said Principal John Kidd.

School administrators say it was unnerving, but they knew exactly what to do while police combed the area for the man.

"They actually searched the riverbank and throughout our building before it was ascertained that it was safe to come out of lockdown," said Kidd.

Police are still looking for that man and ask anyone with information to call KSP Post 9.

The man is believed to be about 5'5" and 150 pounds. He was wearing dark jeans, white tennis shoes and a dark gray hooded sweatshirt.
