Drug and alcohol abuse is a story many of us have heard before, but when the story involves kids it’s hard to know how to make sense of it all – or where to search for answers.

“In Floyd county drugs are running rampant right now especially in our school systems,” said David Gearheart, a substance abuse therapist.

So members of the community banded together to do something.. Organizers at the Auxier United Methodist Church spent two months organizing an ‘Evening At the Park:' an awareness rally they hope will create a ripple effect.

“We wanted to make the community, especially this little mining town of Auxier Kentucky aware of the entire drug trafficking and all of the drug abuse that is going on...and we're hoping that it will spread,” said Mearl Music, pastor of the church,

The theme of the event was a faith- based approach to recovery, but the experts at the event said that the road to recovery has many facets.

“It is something that does require some intervention and assistance from the professional community as well as the church community as well as support and self help groups,” said Mike Vance

For now, attendees of the event say they take comfort in the fact that the problems of youth drug abuse are not being ignored; this rally is proof.
