KNOX COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Knox County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating what caused a school bus to flip over an embankment and land on its side Tuesday morning.

It happened around 7:00 a.m. on Paynes Branch Road.

Around thirty students were on board. School officials say none of them have serious injuries.

Neighbors on Paynes Branch Road say they heard a loud crash and saw something they never wanted to see, their child's school bus rolling over.

"There was a commotion and we ran outside and the bus had slid off the road onto its side right here in our driveway," said Jessica Waskom.

Jessica Waskom had just sent her nine year old son outside to catch the bus. She feared he was underneath it, but he had escaped.

"We were just thankful that he wasn't standing where he typically stands or it would've landed immediately on him," said Jessica Waskom.
"He heard it sliding and started to run," said Inis Waskom, grandmother.

The Waskom family helped dozens of children out of the bus. Students got out through the emergency exits.

"Oh it was real scary. The kids were shaken. A couple had scratches and one had a scratch on his forehead," said Jessica Waskom.

School officials say Knox County EMS checked out all students at the scene. At least seven students went to the hospital as a precaution. Officials say all were released with minor injuries.

"It's amazing. It is very lucky nobody was seriously hurt. It could've been a lot worse," said Knox County Sheriff's Deputy Keith Liford.

Sheriff's deputies are still investigating what caused the bus to crash. Deputies say the rain and wet roads played a role. Knox County School officials say an inspection of the crash scene shows the road gave way.

Witnesses are just thankful students were able to walk away. Officials say the bus driver and bus monitor were not hurt.

"I thank God, yes, thank God," said Inis and Jessica Waskom.

Knox County school officials say another bus ran the route Tuesday afternoon and will run the route again Wednesday.
