Barbourville police captured a man who managed to evade authorities for almost six months. They say they've got the "Bad Hair Bandit" behind bars, and told 27 NEWSFIRST he's confessed to seven bank robberies.
Police took Jason Fox, the confessed "Bad Hair Bandit", to the Whitley County jail Friday evening. Barbourville Detective Steve Owens tracked him down around 2:30 p.m. Friday. He says he was out on a separate call when Fox just happened to pull up right beside him.
"Thinking that there's no way after all the issues we've had that we could be this fortunate," says Detective Owens.
Police in Kentucky and Tennessee counties were searching for a bank robber wearing wigs as disguises. Detective Owens said they'd received a tip that it was Fox, and knew the color and make of the getaway car, seen in Walmart surveillance video taken Thursday night in Williamsburg, right before the robbery of the credit union inside the store. Detective Owens says he took a chance, and pulled Fox over to question him.
"Initially he was fairly reserved. He started out in complete denial of having any knowledge of it."
Hours later, inside the Barbourville Police Department, authorities say Fox confessed to robbing seven banks in the last six months.
"My understanding is the majority of the money was going toward bills and expenses that he and his family had," says Detective Owens.
Police also arrested and charged Fox's wife, Tosha Fox, with first degree complicity to robbery in connection to the L&N Federal Credit Union robbery.
They are both lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center and a federal detainer has been placed on them for their involvement in seven bank robberies.
