PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Folks in one Pike County community are worried about their kids' safety. This comes following a bear sighting in the Kimper community.
Melissa Murphy and her family were out enjoying the summer weather in their backyard, which she says is common in the summertime when all the kids are out of school.
Murphy says, "We were sitting out on the patio and the kids were playing and my daughter was like, 'mom look it's a bear!' I said no it is not and by the time she got my attention and I looked over...it was up on its hind legs."
Kenzie Murphy quickly snapped a photo of the bear on her cell phone and says, "I've heard about them coming up through here but I've never seen one."
The bear was seen on the hillside behind an open field which concerns folks because they say the field is a popular place for children to play.
Melissa Murphy says, "Terrified me because on a normal day when it is nice and pretty out, you have anywhere from eight to fifteen kids out here playing and the thought of a child being attacked in my backyard is scary."
Brittnee McCoy plays in the field and says, "We play tag around there and if we weren't paying attention, which we usually aren't, it could have gotten us."
Murphy says the area sits behind homes and away from the roadway so they always considered it a safe place for children to play. "The bear was seen right there, 50 feet from my back door, so yes it alerts me as a parent."
Kenzie Murphy says, "I don't want my friends to come down here and we have to stay inside because we are afraid of a bear coming off the hill and attacking us."
Other folks living in the area say their garbage was gone through and they thought it was a stray dog but now believe it was the bear seen in the area.
They plan to call Kentucky wildlife officials to see if they can do anything to help.
