PINEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Investigators say someone stole the Bell County Judge-Executive's county vehicle from the Bell County Courthouse and then set it on fire!

There are no arrests yet. Sheriff's Deputies are trying to figure who is responsible and why they did it.

Sheriff's Deputies say on Wednesday afternoon, an ATV rider found the burning vehicle in a wooded area on a logging road off of Route 221 in Bradfordtown. The person called the Sheriff's Department.

"We noticed pretty quickly it was the Judge-Executive's vehicle. You could still see the seals. It caught us completely off guard," said Deputy Shane Stewart.

Fearing the worst, the deputies called Judge-Executive Albey Brock. He answered his cell phone at a Bell County Chamber of Commerce lunch meeting. He rode with someone else there and left the vehicle parked at the Courthouse around 11:30 a.m.

"It was a very brash person that would steal the Judge's vehicle, in broad daylight, lunch time, noon, from his parking spot at the Courthouse," said Stewart.

"I was not surprised there was a theft, but I was shocked somewhat at the location of the vehicle, the time of day," said Judge-Executive Albey Brock.

The Division of Forestry contained the fire in the woods.

The vehicle was a 2008 Jeep Patriot with official plates and "Bell County Fiscal Court" printed on the vehicle.

Brock and Sheriff's Deputies do not know a motive or why someone would steal the vehicle and burn it.

"I don't know. It blows my mind. I don't know why someone would steal his car," said Stewart.

Brock says he has never felt threatened in office.

"These elected offices come with a lot of unexpected peril. I don't at this point feel that has anything to do with it," said Brock.

Investigators ask anyone who might have seen the vehicle leave the courthouse area or on the road between noon and 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday to call the Bell County Sheriff's Office.

The county has insurance on the truck to cover the loss.
