Berea College president meets with Obama

BEREA, Ky. (AP) - The president of Berea College has met with
the president of the United States.

Larry Shinn was among 10 college presidents and two education
groups to meet with President Obama on Monday.

Shinn told the Lexington Herald-Leader that the meeting was
"serious" and focused on ideas to reduce the cost of tuition and
to increase the number of students who graduate from college.

Shinn said his main contribution to the meeting involved a
discussion about Pell Grants, which are federally funded
scholarships for low-income students.

Shinn recommended more restrictions on them and said Education Secretary Arne Duncan asked him to put his ideas in writing - so he handed them over already prepared.

Berea College graduates low-income students at a rate 19 percent
higher than is projected for that population.
