Beshear handing out books at juvenile jail

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - First lady Jane Beshear is scheduled to give out books Tuesday at the Fayette Regional Juvenile Detention Center as part of an international literacy initiative.

The event is part of what's called World Book Night, an annual celebration dedicated to spreading the love of reading.

Beshear, a former teacher, will be among tens of thousands of volunteers who will distribute a half million paperbacks on Tuesday. She will be at the facility at 1 p.m. EDT.

As first lady, Beshear has made education her top priority. Her pet project has been to increase the legal age for dropping out of school from 16 to 18. After years of pushing, the Legislature gave its approval earlier this year.
