Memorial Day services were held a few days early in West Liberty so the governor could attend.
Hundreds of people, including many veterans, gathered at the West Liberty memorial gardens for an annual celebration.
Governor Beshear said that veterans are part of the heart and soul of what Kentucky is all about.
"When memorial day roles around, it's time to stop for a moment and remember all of the men and women who have given their lives in service of this country," said Governor Beshear.
A 21 gun salute, the playing of taps and amazing grace were all part of Friday's ceremony to honor veterans both living and dead.
