Big weather changes could make roads treacherous

PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Drastic changes in weather this week have many people wondering what is next, and road crews are concerned about keeping up.

Transportation officials say heavy rains left standing water on many roads, and below freezing temperatures could cause significant problems.

In the past week much of the region has seen ice storms, sunshine and warmth, severe storms with flooding, and snow. It has many people like Joel Allen, who spends most of his day working outside, wondering what will come next.

"You never know if you wear a coat, wear short sleeves. It's just crazy," he said.

He is not the only one keeping a close eye on the weather. Highway officials say the past week has them working around the clock.

"It's been an interesting week weather wise for sure. Confusing, chaotic, busy, hard tedious work," said Sara George with KYTC District 12.

Crews spent last Friday clearing snow and ice, and storms and heavy rain on Wednesday left flooding and mudslides to deal with. Now there are concerns of more snow.

Officials say it is the roadways that have had high water on them or still have standing water that concern them the most with the potential for snowfall or below freezing temperatures.

"Whatever is left of that water is going to freeze, and by early morning you end up with black ice," said George.

George says pre-treating the roads is impossible when they are wet because the salt brine will just wash away.

"There's not a whole lot we can do until the water recedes," she said.

So she says for now it is a waiting game to see when the water goes down and what will come next.
