Bizarre accident forces couple from home

For Richmond Champion, a call to come home from work wasn't exactly what he expected, much less finding a pickup truck wedged underneath the corner of his house, when he got there.

"It kind of upset me a little bit, but as far as being all torn up, I ain't worried about it," said Champion.

"It's in real bad shape. You can tell by the outside pretty much what the inside will look like," described Chief Mike Sizemore of the East Bernstadt Fire Department.

According to emergency crews, it appears the driver, Charles Fredericks, had a medical emergency that caused him to pass out behind the wheel, sending him off the road, and into the home. Fredericks was rushed to Saint Joseph-London Hospital, then taken to U.K. Hospital where he is in serious condition.

"This is wild," Champion thought aloud, "He [Fredericks] could've had a heart attack, or anything."

Fire fighters say the driver wasn't conscious when they arrived, and there were no signs of Fredericks ever hitting his breaks after dropping off a steep embankment and before he hit the house.

"By looking at the grass, it doesn't look like he even hit his brakes," figured Chief Sizemore.

"I'm just glad my wife wasn't home," added Champion.

The damage was bad enough that Champion and his wife were not allowed back into the home, "It's not safe to live in," described Champion.

The emergency crews cut off all utilities to the home, Thursday night, forcing Champion and his wife to stay with family until they can start to repair the extensive damage.

"You can't let everything tear you all to pieces, because if you do, you're not going to live very long," said Champion.

Chief Sizemore says the weather and wet roads did not likely play a factor in the accident, saying it all happened because of Fredericks' medical condition.
