Black lung cases quadruple since the 1980s

The number of advanced black lung cases in eastern Kentucky has quadrupled since the 1980s.

Researchers say the increase was caused, in part, by failed systems to protect coal miners.

The report points to federal lawmakers for failing to pass new regulations to toughen the 1969 standards for coal dust.
