He has served as Bell County Schools Superintendent for eight years but a recent decision by the board of education may have George Thompson facing some opposition come this summer.

Last week the board voted to declare a vacancy for the superintendent position effective June 30th.

Board members say they are pleased with the school districts improvements under Thompson but want to weigh other options when it comes to the superintendent position.

"The board is doing what they certainly have a responsibility to do and that is to try to find the best person available to lead the district,” Superintendent Thompson said.

Thompson’s contract ends on June 30th and he says he plans on re-applying for the job
