FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A sophomore from Boyd County High School has been chosen from among 17 champions in the Poetry Out Loud state championship in Frankfort.
Gabby Thompson won $200 and a paid trip with a chaperone to Washington for the national finals next month. The second-place winner was Cheyenne Carter of Western Hills High School, who will receive $100 cash and $200 for her school to buy library books.
The program is administered by the Kentucky Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation to encourage learning about poetry through memorization, performance and competition.
The council says the competition started in 2006 and has grown to more than 365,000 students competing last year around the country. For more information, visit http://www.poetryoutloud.org .
