Budget Cuts Reduce Courthouse Security Staff

Cuts in staffing at the Perry County Sheriff

Hazard, Ky. Security lines are at times a bit slower at the Hall of Justice due to budget cuts leading to reduction in security staff.

Monday, the lines were long enough that it led to some being late to court.

"Initially, I thought, 'Well, they're just late,'" said Perry County District Judge Leigh Anne Stephens. "When I gave it more thought, I realized, they probably couldn't get through security."

Stephens prefers to have two bailiffs in her courtroom, but that has been reduced to one on many days. She says it is a concern for both her and others in the courtroom.

"I don't feel so much danger, really. The biggest danger is for people in the audience if something goes wrong," she said.

The staffing should be back to normal in October, said Perry County Sheriff Les Burgett. That is when state funding is expected to come in.
