LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - An assistant secretary of the Army says automatic federal budget cuts scheduled to kick in next week would impact thousands of military jobs in Kentucky and translate to millions in revenue losses.
Katherine Hammack, assistant secretary of the Army for installations, energy and environment, says the cuts could lead to losses of over $600 million in annual revenue that's generated by the Army in Kentucky.
Hammack says 15,000 military jobs would also be affected, either by staff reductions or income losses, and Department of Army civilians and National Guard members would face furloughs.
The Army leader was speaking to reporters Friday after visiting the National Guard Armory in Louisville.
Congress must approve alternative savings before a deadline of March 1 or about $85 billion in cuts will be automatically triggered.
