LYNCH, Ky. (WYMT) - Burglars strike a Harlan County tourist attraction.

Employees discovered a window broken out and items missing from the Portal 31 Mine.

When Brady Creech got to work Wednesday at the Portal 31 exhibition mine, he knew something was wrong.

He says someone broke in a window at the lamp house and stole items.

He says a weed-eater, leaf blower, wheelbarrow, and gas are missing.

Employees used the items for maintenance on the property.

They are not sure if they have the money to replace the items.

“It's tragic for someone to steal from one of our tourist attractions,” Lynch Police Chief Michael Nunley said.

Lynch Police are asking the public for help. Anyone with information on the break in or stolen items should call police.

“We want to find who did it and put an end to it very swiftly and very quickly,” Chief Nunley said.

Meanwhile, Portal 31 employees are trying figure out what to do for maintenance in the tourist season.

Employees are also making security changes in hopes of preventing another theft.

Police are still adding up the damage costs and value of the stolen items, but say whoever is responsible will face felony charges.
