Cabinet begins releasing child death records

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - The state Cabinet for Health and Family
Services has begun releasing documents pertaining to the deaths or
near-deaths of children under its supervision.

Franklin County Circuit Judge Phillip Shepherd last month
ordered the cabinet to turn over its internal fatality reviews and
the case files of children who have been killed or nearly killed to
the state's two largest newspapers, the Lexington Herald-Leader and
The Courier-Journal. The cabinet had resisted releasing the records
until Gov. Steve Beshear announced on Nov. 29 they would be made
public.

The state released dozens of internal reviews Monday that it
conducted in 2009 and 2010 after child deaths or near-deaths from
neglect or abuse.
