LONDON, Ky. (AP) - The U.S. Forest Service has reopened one campground in eastern Kentucky after black bears got too close to visitors and plans to reopen a second one on Friday.
Holly Bay Campground at Laurel River Lake and the Great Meadows Campground in McCreary County were closed over the weekend because of bear encounters.
According to a statement, forestry officials think the bears have left the area after both sites were closed and all food and trash removed. Forest Service rangers and biologists continue to monitor for bear activity.
In the meantime, Forest Supervisor Frank Beum says a strict food storage order is being enforced at all campgrounds and picnic areas in the Daniel Boone National Forest. That means food must be stored in a vehicle or a bear-resistant container.
